36. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Weihnachten in Neuseeland bedeutet für uns: BBQ und Strand!  Den Strand haben wir tagsüber zum Wohnzimmer umfunktioniert und abends gab es dann deutsche Würstchen und Salate bei Freunden. Was soll man sonst auch machen bei so einem Wetter, wenn man doch dazu gar nicht in Weihnachtsstimmung ist? Dies war nun schon unser zweites Weihnachtsgrillen hier am anderen Ende der Welt und auch ohne Weihnachtspyramiden, Spekulatius, Christollen und Co haben wir uns auf diese Tage gefreut. Auch wenn die Familie natürlich gefehlt hat&#8230;</p>
37. <p>Hier in Neuseeland sind zu dieser Zeit die großen Ferien und normalerweise würde man nicht daran denken, zu dieser Zeit in den Urlaub zu fahren &#8211; einfach zu &#8222;crowdy&#8220;!</p>
38. <p>Total egal! Wir haben Urlaub! Also fahren wir los&#8230;</p>
39. <p><span style="color: #333333;">Zuerst geht&#8217;s zum im Te-Urewera-Nationalpark an der Ostküste der neuseeländischen Nordinsel gelegenen Lake Waikaremoana. Ein absoluter &#8222;Traumspot&#8220; und fast vor der Haustür. 2 &#8211; 3 Tage nehmen wir uns vor, dort zu Campen.</span></p>
40. <p>Wir reisen schon seit über einer Stunde die unglaublich kurvenreichen Tiniroto Road entlang als wir plötzlich heftig in die Eisen treten müssen. Die einzige Straße zum Lake ist wegen eines frisch umgestürzten Baumes blockiert. Gott sei dank, konnten wir wenige Zeit später eine kleine Lücke finden, in der wir samt Auto hindurch passten &#8211; über Feld und über Stein kann es also weiter gehen.</p>

42. <p>Bis zu unserem Ziel sind wir gute 2 Stunden unterwegs, was nicht an der Entfernung liegt sondern an der Tatsache, dass die letzten 40 &#8211; 50 km nur aus einer Schotterpiste bestehen und wir somit nicht schneller als 50km/h fahren können &#8211; wenn überhaupt!</p>
43. <p>Auf unserem Weg zum Camp passieren wir mehrere Wasserfälle unweit der &#8218;Straße&#8216;.</p>

50. <p>Der See liegt ca. 600 Meter über den Meeresspiegel, hat eine Fläche von 54 Quadratkilometern und ist etwa 248 Meter tief.</p>

52. <p>Wir schlagen unser Zelt auf dem Mokau Landing Campsite direkt am Seeufer auf. Baden, trocknen, liegen faul rum und machen Lagerfeuer&#8230;</p>

56. <p>&#8230; bis zur ersten Nacht im Zelt. 600 Höhenmeter in Neuseeland bedeuten kalte Nächte. Was gibt es da schöneres als eine Luftmatratze ohne Luft und mit dem Arsch auf dem kalten Boden zu liegen? Ich würd sagen: einiges! Das tolle für Nadine ist, dass ich (ein wenig) schwerer bin und sie somit quasi mit meinem Gewicht und der restlichen Luft in der Matratze nach oben drücke und sie somit den Boden nicht berührt. Bei ihr war der Leidensdruck somit eher begrenzt&#8230;</p>
57. <p>Am nächsten Morgen und etliche Pumpaktionen später strahlt die Sonne und wir machen uns auf den Weg einige der Wanderwege und Höhlen zu erkunden.</p>

62. <p>Am Nachmittag stehen wir vor der Entscheidung noch eine  &#8222;kalte&#8220; Nacht zu bleiben (einen Flicken für die Matratze konnten wir im einzigen Laden weit und breit leider nicht auftreiben) oder einen Tag eher Nach Gisborne zurück zu fahren und eine neue Schlafstatt zu besorgen. Das eineinhalb Stunden und etliche Schotterpistenkilometer entfernt gelegene Wairoa wäre die nächstbeste Option, ohne Garantie dort etwas brauchbares zu finden. Wir entscheiden uns also zurück zu fahren und etwas eher zum East Cape aufzubrechen. Aber vorher wird noch faul am und im See gelegen!</p>

64. <p>Nach einem kurzen Zwischenstopp daheim und mit neuer Luftmatratze ausgestattet geht es auf in Richtung Whakatane und dem East Cape entgegen. Wir machen Halt auf mehreren Campingplätzen entlang der Küste und lassen es uns einfach gut gehen.</p>

121. <p>Circa 6km südlich von Morere gelegen, windet sich eine kleine Schotterpiste ins Inland. Wir folgen der Manganoe Road ungefähr 6 weitere Kilometer, bis wir das typische grüne DOC Schild (DOC = Department of Conservation) am Straßenrand erblicken. Von hier aus geht es zu Fuß steil den Hang hinauf und schließlich über sanfte grüne Hügel zwischen Schafen hindurch bis zum Höhleneingang.</p>

125. <p>Über eine lange Treppe geht es hinab in die Haupthöhle, von der aus zwei weitere, wenige Meter höher gelegene Höhlen über Leitern zu erreichen sind.</p>

128. <p>Wir stapfen durch eiskaltes, sehr sedimenthaltiges Wasser und bahnen uns unseren Weg durch die Dunkelheit. Aufgrund der starken Regenfälle in den vergangenen Wochen tropft es auch von oben aus jeder Ritze.</p>

133. <p>Jeweils am Anfang der Leitern ist es nicht ganz ungefährlich, da durch das viele Wasser und den schlammigen Boden man leicht in eine der zahlreichen Felsspalten rutschen kann.</p>

135. <p>Zum Glück ist das Wetter draußen traumhaft und so werden wir schnell von der Sonne getrocknet!</p>

138. <p>Die Reise geht für uns weiter nach Morere. Die kleine Siedlung ist für ihre heißen Quellen bekannt. Dafür ist uns heute zu warm und so entscheiden wir uns für den zweieinhalbstündigen Mangakawa Track. Bei dem man nicht weniger schwitzt&#8230;</p>

142. <p>Durch dichten, sehr abwechslungsreichen Busch erklimmen wir den Gipfel eines nahe gelegenen Berges, bevor uns der Weg entlang verschiedener Bäche und Wasserfälle wieder in Richtung der heißen Quellen führt.</p>

146. <p>Insgesamt fünfmal hüpfen wir von Stein zu Stein von einer zur anderen Flussseite, bevor es schließlich für ein kleines Stück auf Findlingen im Flusslauf weiter geht.</p>

174. <p>Der Wald wird von 40 Meter hohen Kahikatea Bäumen überragt, welche sich hier den Platz mit den kleineren Puriri streitig machen. Dies macht das kleine Wäldchen Neuseeland-weit zu etwas ganz besonderem, da man diese Bäume nur sehr selten zusammen findet. Während der Kahikatea feuchte Böden bevorzugt, mögen es die Puriri&#8217;s generell eher recht trocken&#8230;</p>

212. <p>Es ist schon erschreckend, wie schnell und hoch das Wasser steigen kann und welche Auswirkungen es auf das Leben vieler Hausbesitzer hat. Bei vielen Häusern, die nicht hoch genug gelegen sind und in unmittelbarer nähe zum Fluss stehen, findet man das Wasser direkt vor der Haustür oder schlimmer noch im Haus (im Falle einer Kollegin von Nadine) wieder.</p>

218. <p>Immer wieder berichten verschiedene Nachrichtendienste von Erdrutschen, umgefallenen Bäumen und gesperrten Strassen. Viele Orte um Gisborne sind erst einmal nicht mehr zu erreichen. Schulen und Kindergärten, sowie viele Firmen, bleiben geschlossen.</p>
219. <p>Als wir uns heute ein Bild von der Lage machen wollten, waren wir nicht allein. Gefühlt halb Gisborne war auf den Strassen, sobald sich gegen Mittag plötzlich die Wolken verzogen und von strahlendem Sonnenschein abgelöst wurden. Wir sahen riesige Baumstämme, Bootsstege, Kühlschränke und andere Habseligkeiten in Richtung Meer treiben. Auch am Strand selber ein Bild der Verwüstung: Ziemlich große Schlammwellen brachen sich an den Kaimauern und von den Flüssen mitgerissene, tote Nutztiere wurden angespült&#8230;</p>

Ob es die detailreichen Schnitzereien auf den Sitzbänken sind, die kostenlos zu nutzenden Barbecue&#8217;s oder die neuen Strandduschen und Wasserspender, der neue walkway ist eine echte Bereicherung für das verschlafene Gisborne.</p>

255. <p>Am letzten Samstag war es dann so weit: es gab eine offizielle Eröffnung! Der Bürgermeister erklärte am letzten Samstag zur offiziellen Eröffnung wie schwer es war, die neue Promenade zu realisieren. Nur durch viel ehrenamtliche Arbeit und der Unterstützung lokaler Firmen war es möglich, das teure Projekt ins Leben zu rufen. Auch die ständige Veränderung der Gegebenheiten am Strand musste berücksichtigt werden und so gibt es nun Strandleitern, statt fester Wege, die den Sand an Ort und Stelle halten sollen und viel Mühe wurde in eine dichtere Bepflanzung der Dünen gesteckt. Dementsprechend stolz sind alle Beteiligten und so gab es eine Menge Ansprachen, Gesang, eine geführte Tour und Würstchen für alle Schaulustigen am Eröffnungstag.</p>

302. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Unser erster Halt auf unserer Reise rund ums East Cape ist Matata. Ein kleines 666 Seelen Dorf circa 24 nordwestlich von Whakatane. Dort werden wir uns am nächsten Tag mit Vorräten eindecken und noch einmal volltanken um für die nächsten Tage gut gerüstet zu sein. Denn das East Cape ist vor allem eins: einsam. Es gibt kaum Möglichkeiten an Benzin oder etwas Essbares zu kommen und wenn, dann sind die Preise deutlich höher als in der Stadt.</p>
303. <p>In Matata verbringen wir einen sehr schönen Abend mit Maria und Walter. Die beiden haben wir in Persepolis im Iran kennen gelernt. Wir haben nur ein paar Stunden miteinander verbracht, aber eine gemeinsame Autopanne, das erste mal Trampen im Iran&#8230; – so etwas schweißt zusammen! Nein, die zwei sind einfach sehr sympathisch und zudem bewundernswert, denn sie sind bereits Anfang 60 und haben es nicht wie wir beim Iran belassen, sondern sind weiter über Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan etc. nach China gereist. Unglaublich, nun sehen wir uns auf einem kleinen Campingplatz in Neuseeland wieder! Wir genießen einen schönen Abend voller Geschichten, Cidre und Wein <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">bei Kerzenschein</span> im Licht eines kleinen, nicht sehr zuverlässigen Strahlers, bevor sich unsere Wege wieder trennen.</p>

305. <p>Während es die beiden gen Norden zieht, machen wir vier uns auf um die Ostküste zu erkunden! Nachdem wir unser Zelt von Vogelscheiße befreit haben&#8230;</p>

307. <p>Während so ein Baum den Aufprall potentiellen Platzregens auf unserer nicht allzu hochqualitativen Zeltplane ganz wunderbar mildern kann, birgt er eben auch andere Gefahren. So viel zum Alltag des gemeinen Campers!</p>
308. <p>Unsere heutige Route führt uns vorbei an wunderschönen, einsamen Buchten, bis zum in der Waihau Bay gelegenen Maraehako Camping Ground. Ich kann die Aussicht nur bedingt genießen – der Diplomat macht sehr merkwürdige Geräusche beim Bremsen&#8230; Bis zur nächsten Werkstatt sind es entweder 50km zurück nach Opotiki oder 290km nach Gisborne. Es ist Samstag und wir müssten bis Montag in Opotiki bleiben, um in einer Werkstatt vorstellig werden zu können. Ich erinnere mich dunkel daran, dass Bremsscheiben durch ein Geräusch ankündigen, dass man sie bald wechseln muss&#8230; Das Team entscheidet also: weiterfahren!</p>

310. <p>Und so bange ich bei jeder Kurve und jedem Abbremsen, dass unsere Diagnose die richtige ist. Sicherheitshalber fahren wir ganz gemütlich&#8230;</p>

313. <p>Dies ist die Kirche von Raukokore, unter der offensichtlich manchmal Pinguine nisten. Wir haben leider keine gesehen – oder gerochen! Dafür birgt unser Campingplatz eine Überraschung: Wir dürfen Feuer machen! Das ist in Neuseeland sehr ungewöhnlich. Wir nutzen die Gelegenheit: es gibt Stockbrot an Palmwedel! Palmwedel eignen sich übrigens nicht so gut als Stockbrothalterung&#8230;</p>

317. <p>Am nächsten Tag geht es für uns über Te Araroa weiter zum East Cape. Es ist zu windig um dort unser Zelt aufzustellen &#8211; geschweige denn auf unserem Gaskocher zu kochen &#8211; und so machen wir uns direkt auf den Weg zum Leuchtturm am östlichsten Zipfel des Landes, um anschließend ein geschützteres Plätzchen für die Nacht zu suchen.</p>

322. <p>22 Kilometer Schotterpiste weiter und um die 700 Stufen höher sehen wir ihn dann: Den Ort Neuseelands, der als erstes die Sonne erblickt!</p>

332. <p>Aus der Ferne sehen wir den Mount Hikurangi, der mit 1754 Metern höchste Berg der Nordinsel, der nicht gleichzeitig auch ein Vulkan ist. Über Te Puia Springs (mit dem einzigen Krankenhaus am Kap) und Tokomaru Bay (hier waren wir schon einmal bei unserem letzten Aufenthalt in Gisborne, wir betreten wieder bekannte Gefilde!) geht es für uns nach Anaura Bay. In dieser wunderschönen Bucht verbringen wir zwei Tage, lassen die Beine baumeln, schauen der Campingplatzverwalterin beim Rasenmähen zu, setzen uns nach der langen Zeit ohne Handyempfang wieder mit der Zivilisation in Verbindung, angeln, rennen die Bucht rauf und runter oder tun einfach mal nichts.</p>

340. <p>Das gleiche machen wir dann noch einmal auf einem ebenfalls sehr schönen Campingplatz in der Tatapouri Bay! Zuvor waren wir noch in Tolaga Bay und sind auch den Cooks Cove Walk mit Jan und Nina gegangen &#8211; unglaublich, wie sehr sich die Landschaft in diesen drei Monaten verändert hat!</p>

386. <p>Was uns als erstes auffällt: der Gestank! Auf unserem Weg in die Stadt wird mir übel, aus den Gullideckeln und den Wäldern dampft es &#8211; fast überall riecht es nach Schwefel. Zum Glück adaptieren unsere Nasen an den Geruch und beim Mittagessen im Kuirau Park stören wir uns schon nicht mehr am ‚faule Eier Duft’ der von den blubbernden Quellen rund um uns herum abgegeben wird.</p>

388. <p>Viel mehr als den Park schauen wir uns in Rotorua auch gar nicht an – die Vielfalt geothermaler Aktivität haben wir im nahe Taupo gelegenen Orakei Korako schon bewundert und auf Einblicke in die Kultur der Maori hoffen wir auf ganz natürliche Weise, ohne das touristische Tam Tam, in unserer künftigen Heimat Gisborne. Und so machen wir uns lieber auf den Weg in Richtung eines der einsamsten Gebiete der Nordinsel: dem East Cape nördlich von Gisborne. Vorher zieht es uns jedoch nach Tauranga. Wir verbringen einen gemütlichen Nachmittag im McLaren Falls Park, ein paar Kilometer südwestlich der Stadt.</p>

392. <p>Unsere Milch hat sich in meinem Rucksack und in ganz großem Stil auch unsere Kofferraummatte gesogen, so dass der gemütliche Teil des Nachmittags leider erst beginnen kann, als alles in der Sonne zum Trocknen hängt.</p>

395. <p>Am nächsten Morgen geht es dann weiter nach Tauranga und zum Mount Maunganui! Diese Orte sind bei Neuseeländern vor allem für ihren hohen Anteil an Rentnern bekannt – hier lässt man sich gern nieder, wenn man in Auckland sein Geld verdient hat. Und erst einmal hier angekommen, verstehen wir auch warum: schöne Strände, gute Infrastruktur und deutlich geringere Hauspreise als in Auckland. Wir lassen Bilder sprechen:</p>

401. <p>Hier ist es schön, doch wir sind froh, dass es für uns weiter nach Gisborne geht. Während hier alles sehr touristisch und damit auch stark bebaut ist, findet man dort noch jede Menge unberührter Natur – sogar an den städtischen Stränden.</p>

431. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nach einem kurzen Zwischenstopp in Auckland mit guter Pasta von Markus, einem schönen Abend zu sechst und dem Immigration Medical für Maurice am nächsten Morgen geht es für Jan, Nina, Maurice und mich weiter nach Coromandel. Auf dieser hügeligen und größtenteils von subtropischem Regenwald bewachsenen Halbinsel wollen wir uns aus Zeitgründen bloß zwei Dinge anschauen.</p>
432. <p>Zeitgründe? Ja richtig, die Zeit wird langsam knapp! Am 23.02.2015 habe ich meinen ersten Arbeitstag. Bis dahin sollten wir es also nach Gisborne schaffen!</p>
433. <p>An der Coromandels Ostküste liegen sowohl der Hot Water Beach als auch die Cathedral Cove. Wir entscheiden uns zuerst letztere anzuschauen, da man mit dem heißen Wasser der Quellen am Hot Water Beach nur bei Ebbe schöne Badewannen bauen kann, ohne dass die nächste Welle das warme Wasser aus dem Loch spült.</p>
434. <p>Das Meer hat den Kalksandstein in der Mercury Bay so weit erodiert, dass sich interessante Steilküsten, Höhlen und kleine, wie verzaubert wirkende Buchten an diesem Küstenabschnitt gebildet haben. Wir steuern den Ausgangspunkt zu unserer Wanderung zur Cathedral Cove an und sind erstaunt, wie viele andere Touristen den gleichen Plan hatten! Die Ferien sind vorbei, es ist ein Mittwoch und doch finden wir beim ersten Versuch nicht mal einen Parkplatz. Frustriert wollen wir schon aufgeben. Es ist nicht nur das Pech mit der Parkplatzsuche&#8230; Touristenmassen sind ja auch nicht so unser Ding und zudem ist mir, aber ganz besonders Nina, ziemlich übel, nachdem wir bei der Fahrt durch das Inselinnere auf der Rücksitzbank ganz schön hin und her geschaukelt wurden. Aber nun sind wir hier! Wir verschnaufen kurz, gehen erneut auf Parkplatzjagd, ergattern schließlich einen und wandern los!</p>

436. <p>Auf unserem Weg steuern wir zunächst Gemstone und Stingray Bay an, bevor wir die berühmte Cathedral Cove erreichen. Immer wieder erhaschen wir beeindrucke Blicke auf die Küste. Es ist ein wirklich schöner Wanderweg! Nur leider auch ein sehr, sehr gut besuchter&#8230; Wer mag, kann die Cathedral Cove auch per Kanu oder per Boot mit einer Tour erkunden! Einmal dort angekommen, wartet neben schönen Stränden eine riesige, zwei Buchten miteinander verbindende Höhle, die Cathedral Cove, auf uns.</p>

439. <p>Leider haben wir keine Badesachen mitgenommen, aber was soll’s – der Hot Water Beach wartet ja schon! Es ist bald Ebbe und so machen wir uns auf den Weg zurück zum Parkplatz und fahren ein paar Kilometer weiter zu den am direkt am Strand gelegenen heißen Quellen. Etwa 2000 Meter unter der Erdoberfläche befinden sich hier ca. 170 Grad heiße Gesteinsschichten unterhalb eines Wasserreservoirs. Während kaltes Wasser in den Stein sickert, wird das aufgewärmte an die Oberfläche gedrückt wo es mit etwa 60 Grad an zwei Stellen aus dem Sand sickert. Kurz ein Loch gebuddelt und da ist sie: die perfekte Badewanne, direkt am Meer! In der Theorie&#8230; Leider ist auch dieser Ort richtig gut besucht und es gibt mehr Menschen als heißes Wasser. Es wird wild gebuddelt und die Temperatur in jeder Pfütze überprüft &#8211; doch es gibt nur ein paar wenige glückliche, die schließlich im warmen Wasser baden. Ein wenig enttäuscht ziehen wir weiter und entscheiden uns, Coromandel schon ein wenig früher wieder zu verlassen als gedacht. Landschaftlich fanden wir die Halbinsel wirklich schön, doch an unserem Ziel, der Küste, war uns einfach zu viel los.</p>

441. <p>Unser Zelt schlagen wir heute Nacht auf einem Flugplatz nahe Matamata auf, wo Jan und Nina sich am nächsten Morgen das Hobbingen / Hobbiton Film Set anschauen wollen. Pünktlich zum Sonnenuntergang kommen wir an und: müssen unsere Zelte gar nicht auspacken! Der Manager ist ein Herz von Seele &#8211; lässt uns unser Bettenlager in einem seiner Zimmer errichten und stellt uns seine Küche und Waschmaschine zur Verfügung.</p>

444. <p>Am nächsten Morgen geht es also ohne Zeltabbau und in sauberen Sachen direkt los! Da Maurice und ich uns nicht so sehr für die Herr der Ringe Trilogie begeistern können, haben wir uns allerdings entschieden die 75$ pro Person lieber an anderer Stelle in Tauchgänge oder ähnliches zu investieren. Jan und Nina (ebenfalls keine wahren Herr der Ringe Fans) waren übrigens wirklich begeistert von ihrer Tour und würden den Besuch des Filmsets wärmstens weiter empfehlen!</p>

496. <p>Was könnte schöner sein? Ein Fisch an der Angel! Mehrere Stunden verbringt Maurice beim Angeln während die Fische munter um ihn herum schwimmen und fast schon schadenfroh wirken, wie sie so fröhlich direkt vor seiner Nase aus dem Wasser hüpfen. Am Ende hat sich dann aber doch ein kleines Exemplar an den Haken verirrt!</p>

500. <p>Der Strand am Rarawa Beach ist unglaublich weiß. Da wir die Kamera nur in der Dämmerung mal mit am Strand hatten, kommt das hier gar nicht so zur Geltung.</p>

502. <p>Nicht weit nördlich von uns liegt die Kokota Sandspit an der Mündung zum Parengarenga Harbour. Hier wurde bis 1997 der leuchtendweiße Quarzsand der damals noch riesigen Dünen zur Glasherstellung abgebaut. Und genau dieser Quarzsand ist es sicher, der den Rarawa Beach so unglaublich weiß erscheinen lässt.</p>

505. <p>Unser Weg führt uns schließlich vorbei am Parengarenga Harbour immer weiter gen Norden, bis ans Cape Reinga. Hier trifft nicht nur der pazifische Ozean auf die Tasmansee, hier treten auch die Seelen der Maori ihre letzte Reise in das Land ihrer Vorfahren, das mystische Hawaiki, an.</p>

509. <p>Die eigentliche Nordspitze des Landes liegt an den Surveiile Cliffs, 30km weiter östlich. Da diese in einem für die Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglichen Naturschutzgebiet zu liegen scheint, versuchen wir erst gar nicht unser Glück und machen uns lieber auf den Weg zu den wandernden, um die 50 Meter hohen Te Paki Dünen. Nachdem wir feststellen mussten, dass man mit unseren Picknickdecken nicht die gewünschte Geschwindigkeit erreicht, habe ich mich kurzerhand mit einem kleinen Jungen angefreundet, der mir dann bereitwillig seinen Lenkschlitten ausgeliehen hat. Mörderisch! Und viel schneller als die überall angebotenen Bodyboards!</p>

512. <p>Den Ninety Mile Beach, einen offiziellen Highway mit einer Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung von 100km/h, schauen wir uns aus Angst um unser treues Transportmittel nur zu Fuß an. Würden wir dort stecken bleiben, käme kein Abschleppdienst um unser liebevoll mit einer Captain America verziertes Diplomatengefährt zu retten. Da hier kein Abschleppdienst zur Hilfe kommt, wenn man im Sand stecken bleibt, hat wohl schon der ein oder andere sein Auto an die Fluten verloren&#8230;</p>
