Bitter Roots

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”

Hebrews 12:15

A few days ago I had a lengthy discussion with a few other Christians. Before long, one of them starting telling us what a hard time she has been going through. Yes, she has been through worst times, which no-one would willingly wish to go through in their lives. First people sympathized with her, which seemingly did her good. However, then we noticed an immense bitterness in her. She couldn't let go, she couldn't really forgive. It was eating her up inside and a lot of the bitterness had already turned to pride, not only against those who had hurt her, but also against God, Who allowed her to go through this...

The Bible calls such bitterness sin. We must let it go and not allow it to fester. When we are bitter, it doesn't just affect others, it also destroys our hearts, leaving to place for love. When we forgive others, it helps us to be be reconciled and set free.

But, true forgiveness calls for us to exchange our pride for humility. True greatness is first revealed through humility, when we say to God: I don't know why – but let Your will be done. When we exchange our reputed right against grace, when we can truly forgive and forget, only then can we truly be free to live a happy life.

What are you still carrying around with you? What burden are you still not prepared to let go of? Bring it before the Cross, upon which the LORD already carried it for you.

I wish you a blessed day
